3 NFL Draft Takeaways from Round One
Here are our 3 NFL Draft takeaways from Thursday night’s first round. First of all, the first 5 picks seemed like business as usual. The first really intriguing moment came when the Giants were on the clock with the sixth pick. Would they take a quarterback, wide receiver, offensive lineman or pass rusher? This organization seems to have a love-hate relationship with its present QB Daniel Jones so drafting another QB was not out of the question.
However, they opted to take a speedy receiver, Malik Nabers out of LSU.

By doing so, the Giants allowed the Vikings to exhale a sigh of relief because they wanted a QB. But I am convinced they were fine with either JJ McCarthy or Michael Penix Jr. since they did not, or could not, trade up ahead of the Giants.
However, when the Falcons shocked the world by picking Penix, despite signing Kirk Cousins, the Vikings needed to worry about the Broncos jumping ahead of them for a QB. In the end, the Vikings moved up one and got McCarthy.
As we continue our 3 NFL Draft takeaways, what are the Falcons thinking?? They just gave Cousins a 4 year deal and guaranteed the first two seasons at $100 million dollars. Why not make the Cousins-led team better? He was certainly perplexed by the move. So are we.
And Sean Payton was bent on getting a quarterback no matter what. But given his draft position and who was available, Bo Nix might be the right guy for him because Nix is risk averse and takes the high percentage completion. We are not sure that’s how you win games but Payton seems to want a QB he can control, unlike Russell Wilson.
Those are our initial thoughts on the draft. Give us your opinion every afternoon with Craig Shemon and Company on ESPN Southwest Florida.
Just for fun, let’s see how the draft stacks up against the predictions made last month.
NFL Mock Draft 1.0: An Offense-Heavy Round 1
The “crazy season” portion of the NFL offseason is upon us! It began with the NFL Combine this weekend, which will quickly turn into the start of free agency next week. After that, the pro day circuit begins, and the NFL Draft will be here before we know it.
Looking ahead, the Combine helped set the tone for the weeks to come in two major ways. One – there’s now much more information on the prospects in this year’s NFL Draft up and down the board. That helps formulate projections.
On top of that, the rumor mill that is the Combine certainly was churning last week. With free agency still a week away, it allowed some foundation to make further assumptions about what teams will do in the coming weeks.
Working from that information, we have a decent idea of where things stand before the big-time decisions start to happen. With that, let’s kick off the week will our first full NFL Mock Draft of the season, to set the table for what’s to come.
After strong showings from both positions at the Combine, nearly half of the first round is made up of just wide receivers (eight total) and tackles (seven total). The Patriots are among the teams taking advantage of one of those groups, making a trade to give themselves two selections in the first round.
Note: Trades referenced were made for this mock specifically. Previously completed trades are not detailed.
