Are the Chiefs Leaving Kansas City?
Missouri residents voted against funding for a new football and baseball stadium in Kansas City. And now the question has to be asked; are the Chiefs leaving Kansas City? Voters voted against the proposed tax by a resounding 58% putting the future of the Chiefs and Royals in question. It is difficult to image a team with the on-field success leaving a city, but the future of the Chiefs in Kansas City is very much in the air right now.
There could be a re-worked proposal that gets voted on in the future. But at 58% it is difficult to see how over 8% of the population change their minds on the matter. The the answer to the question “are the Chiefs leaving Kansas City” can’t be answered right now. But it seems more likely that the Royals stay opposed to the Chiefs.
The Royals have already pledged $1 billion in private funding for a new stadium. The Chiefs on the other hand have pledged just $300 million of a proposed $800 million renovation plan. And a much larger trend is starting to emerge with Chiefs owner Clark Hunt. He is cheap.
In the annual NFLPA Team Report Card the Kansas City Chiefs ranked towards to bottom of the league in Food/Cafeteria, Nutritionist/Dietician, Locker Room, Training Room, Training Staff, Team Travel, and Team Ownership. The Chiefs ranked dead last in the league in their Training Staff and Team Ownership. Clark Hunt is a tremendous bourdon for the Kansas City Chiefs. And they are winning in spite of him, not because of him.
So are the Chiefs leaving Kansas City?
Not right now. But if the current trend of Clark Hunt being cheap in every facet of ownership the is seems likely. Clark Hunt and owners that have inherited their teams can not keep up with the billionaires that are buying into the league. And now it seems like the Chiefs could be on their way out of Kansas City. Missouri has already lost one NFL franchise. Don’t think it can’t happen again. Clark Hunt seems like the kind of guy that would love to have a city or state build a new stadium for him so he can continue his cheap ways.
