Ok, what? Spring breakers always seem to be the finding new ways to be stupid, but this one is special. This is way past anything I've seen in Fort Myers. Spring breakers are actually paying to get slapped. Ok, so the slap is from a bikini clad beauty in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and it comes with a shot. But still...
It's going down at the Backyard in Fort Lauderdale and despite the vibe, the place is not even on the beach. But according to reports on social media, guys wait in line to be abused by a woman who calls herself "Hurricane Aiyana." So much so, that's she's actually created a menu with different prices. I get it, some college students are on a tighter budget than others. 🤣
With a namesake "Hurricane shot" for $30, so, how does she do? Quite well, apparently. "So far this March, Callas tells Axios she is selling 150–200 hurricane shots a night." Just doing some quick math, that's $5,000 + a night. Wowzers.
Why do spring breakers do this?
It's an experience, and of course, they want to post it on social media. Or, as my coworker so eloquently put it "guys are weird." Wanna see her make a bunch of money in seconds?
Spring break isn't forever, you get 2 months, tops. So what is Aiyana doing when she's not slapping spring breakers in the face? She's living the dream. She owns her own sailboat and when she's not tending bar on spring break in Fort Lauderdale, she's exploring the world. Just this past year she's sailed the Atlantic, to Europe and Africa and to the Med. Some of the hashtags on her adventures include #amsterdam #ibiza #london #mykonos.
I've personally done Spring Break on Fort Myers Beach (pre hurricane) and St. Petersburg during my college years. I'll admit, I never saw anything like this. But St. Pete has it's own thing, too.
St. Pete Beach Bar Has Bikini Clad Servers Hanging Upside Down Serving Shots
St. Pete Beach in Florida has always been more of the party section of Tampa. But there's a beach bar called Undertow that's really setting itself apart. First up, the staff are in bikinis. It's a beach bar, so the theme makes sense. But if you want the full experience of this place, order the upside down shot.
My love of St. Pete Beach goes back way before I moved to South Florida. It's where we came for Spring Break. The four of us from Ohio met up with a local who showed us the best spots to party away from the usual hang outs. I'd put it down as one of the top 5 most insane weeks of my life. Somehow we escaped with no injuries or arrests. The old adage "come on vacation, leave on probation" didn't apply to us, but not for lack of trying.
Back to the Undertow.
After I saw some of the videos trending, I checked out some Yelp Reviews. Lol. It's basically out of town tourists trashing the place. One from Tennessee obviously expected different "Bartending is an art." An 'elite reviewer' from Ohio says "We are visiting from a city who has exceptional cocktail bars and amazing service. Not this ." Love this review "if you are a man and want to see bartenders in thongs. Well this is your place to go."
So what's got the Yelp Karens all worked up? It's something the Undertow calls the 'Upside Down Shot'.
A score of 10 on the dismount
This is the original video I saw trending. You can say whatever you want about the drinks, but this bartender clearly knows what she's doing.
Summers coming
This one's from back in March. Dude got a little handsy which I don't recommend.
Girls Need Shots Too
I used to bartend. After dealing with drunks for hours, you need a drink yourself. And this is how they do it.
Yeah, she doesn't need help
Maybe just step back sir. I think she's got this.
Women need shots, too.
Of course there's a dude in an Ohio State shirt drinking a Mich Ultra. Wouldn't be St. Pete Beach without it. I'm from Ohio, this is how it is. They all wear Ohio State shirts everywhere they go. And they have an Ohio State polo that they keep nice for church. It's an odd place.
Is the slap extra?
The tag on this says $100. Is the Upside Down Shot $100 or was there an extra charge for the slap? People are weird.
