After Netflix acquired the rights to the Knives Out sequel last year, the streaming giant has kept things relatively under wraps until they finally revealed the title on Twitter.
Yesterday (June 13), Netflix revealed, "Benoit Blanc returns in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery" with a credit sequence which sees director Rian Johnson’s return to the film and also sees the rest of the cast which includes Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Dave Bautista, Madelyn Cline, Jessica Henwick, Kate Hudson and Leslie Odom Jr.
As we earlier reported, Netflix spent $450 million for the rights to Knives Out 2 and 3, making it the biggest film purchase in history -- almost double the budget of Netflix’s The Gray Man ($200 million).
If you haven’t watched Knives Out yet, it stars Daniel Craig as super sleuth Benoit Blanc, a master detective who investigates the murder of a wealthy eccentric crime novelist in his house. His money-grabbing family finds themselves under suspicion. The original film featured an ensemble cast consisting of Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Don Johnson, Toni Collette, Lakeith Stanfield, Katherine Langford, Jaeden Martell, and the late Christopher Plummer.
In a Twitter thread, Johnson revealed his vision for the film writing in a thread, “Something I love about Agatha Christie is how she never tread water creatively. I think there’s a misperception that her books use the same formula over and over, but fans know the opposite is true."
"It wasn’t just settings or murder methods, she was constantly stretching the genre conceptually," Johnson continued. "Under the umbrella of the whodunnit she wrote spy thrillers, proto-slasher horrors, serial killer hunts, gothic romances, psychological character studies, glam travelogues."
Concluding his thread, Johnson said, "When I made Knives Out, that’s what excited me about the prospect of making more mysteries with Daniel as Benoit Blanc — to emulate Christie and have every film be like a whole new book, with its own tone, ambition, reason for being…and (ta dah) title.”
