Nearly $1.4B In Stimulus Checks Sent To Over A Million Of Deceased Americans

Over a million deceased Americans received COVID-19 stimulus payments totaling $1.4 billion in wrongly delivered money, according to NBC News. 

The finding is part of a review of the federal government's response to the coronavirus pandemic by the Government Accountability Office.

In March, Congress passed the massive $2 trillion CARES Act in hopes to address the economic fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic. Individuals making up to $75,000 a year received checks for $1,200 and couples making up to $150,000 and filing a joint tax return received $2,400, with an additional $500 per qualifying child.

Many relatives of dead Americans said they received coronavirus relief payments on behalf of their loved one in the first round of payments and initially believed they could keep the payments. But according to NBC News, the IRS said that people who have died do not qualify for the coronavirus relief payments and "should be returned to the IRS."
