The most popular game in the world, Fortnite, reportedly has removed police cars from the game in the recent season update, first reported by The Wall Street Journal.
- Fortnite season 2 ending event saw an audience of over 10 million people.
- Season 3's largest change is the geography of the map. Players have watched over the last few weeks as a giant wall of water formed around the map.
- Epic Games claims removing police cars is NOT "a political statement," but instead "being sensitive about the issues many people in our audience are dealing with."
Fortnite Removes Police Cars
The police cars in the game were merely decorative, so removing them doesn't affect the gameplay. This change was not released by Epic Games outright but noticed through the Reddit community after the update.
Political statement or not, Epic Games had delayed the Season 2 ending event and spoke out during the rising protests for Black Lives Matter. Epic Games released a blog post on June 3 stating:
Recent events are a heavy reminder of ongoing injustices in society, from the denial of basic human rights to the impact of racism both overt and subtle against people of color. We're acutely aware of the pain our friends, families, team members, players, and communities are experiencing.
We believe in equality and justice, diversity and inclusion, and that these fundamentals are above politics.
The team is eager to move Fortnite forward, but we need to balance the Season 3 launch with time for the team to focus on themselves, their families, and their communities...
