In what would obviously be a big boost to their business, Trulieve has put 5 million dollars of their own money behind the new initiative to get Florida Recreational Marijuana on the 2024 Ballot. The plan is to let Florida voters decide whether weed should be legal in Florida for recreational use for people age 21 or older. There's been other attempts at legalizing recreational use since medicinal was adopted back in 2016.  But all have failed.

As reported by Tampa MP: "The “Adult Personal Use of Marijuana” proposal would allow people 21 or older “to possess, purchase, or use marijuana products and marijuana accessories for non-medical personal consumption by smoking, ingestion, or otherwise.” Paperwork was filed today at the Division Of Elections.

Last year, the Florida Supreme Court rejected two similar proposals attempting to legalize Florida Recreational Marijuana.

Trulieve's CEO Kim Rivers said “Every initiative has provided some level of learning,” she said. “With this initiative, the authors have taken a hard look at the Supreme Court rulings surrounding the previous efforts and taken that into consideration. We believe it’s a very appropriate and narrowly focused amendment that does defer appropriately to the Legislature.” So the idea is, learn from why the other initiatives failed.  Then keep trying.

The next step to get the Florida Recreational Marijuana initiative on the ballot is to get people to sign the petition. They'll need roughly 900,000 petition signatures to make it onto the 2024 ballot. The online petition states that new proposed amendment “Allows adults 21 years or older to possess, purchase, or use marijuana products and marijuana accessories for non-medical personal consumption by smoking, ingestion, or otherwise; allows Medical Marijuana Treatment Centers, and other state licensed entities, to acquire, cultivate, process, manufacture, sell, and distribute such products and accessories. Applies to Florida law; does not change, or immunize violations of, federal law. Establishes possession limits for personal use. Allows consistent legislation. Defines terms. Provides effective date.” The official petition goes live on August 15th.

There are currently just over 14 million people registered to vote in the state, so this number is very makeable.
