Legendary coach John Thompson Jr. passes away at 78
Coming from New England, I can’t stress enough how much John Thompson meant to me and the game of basketball in so many ways on and off the court..Me being a huge Providence College fan for my entire life and John being a PC alum from 1964 and then becoming the head coach at Georgetown was someone I always rooted for with the exception of when they played my beloved Friars..When he won the title in 1984, not only becoming the first African-American head coach to win a championship but as he said, “there was a brotherhood, a togetherness because a school from the Northeast had finally won a title, and that meant something..”..He was one of a kind, a true legend…Rest in peace Big John….
