ESPN Announces ESPN Bet
ESPN is going all in with gambling as ESPN announces “ESPN Bet”. The Worldwide Sports Leader has partnered with PENN Entertainment to launch their own betting platform. If Penn Entertainment sounds familiar, they have been working with Barstool Sports for the last couple of years. Barstool and Penn branded the platform as “Barstool Sportsbook”. The online book would offer boosted odds tied to some of the personalities. It’s unknown if ESPN and Penn will follow the same model, but the framework has been laid. ESPN Bet will launch this fall according to a press release from ESPN. Maybe launch isn’t a great term to use. Rebrand is probably ore appropriate. And they will still operate in the 16 states where they are licensed. Sports wagering is still on hold in the state of Florida. Should it become legalized the new platform could make it’s way to the Sunshine State.
I don’t think PENN gaming will allow ESPN’s “Power Index” to play a role in the odds market. This spring ESPN “Basketball Power Index” gave the Miami Heat a 3% chance to beat the Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals. That’s just one example of ESPN trying to get into the prognostication game, but failing miserably. I thought it was odd when ESPN announces ESPN Bet with PENN Entertainment. ESPN and Barstool Sports don’t have the best relationship. But minutes after the ESPN announcement, Dave Portnoy announced PENN and Barstool are no longer partners. And kudos to Dave for getting complete control of his company back for $0. I don’t know if this ESPN Bet will work out for ESPN. But it’s really clear the sports media landscape is being forced to embrace sports gambling.
The "REAL" College Football Pre-Season Rankings of 2023
The “real” college football pre-season top 25 rankings are here for 2023. Most of you know by now that I will be posting on this subject every Monday beginning after week 1 of the college football season.
The first “Coaches Poll” came out on Monday. Mine is slightly different as you might expect. The AP pre-season ranking will come on out Monday, August 14th at noon.
I don’t trust AP voters and certainly not Coaches Poll voters. The people voting in both of those polls either don’t watch enough college football, vote against other teams on purpose due to regionalisms or simply have their respective sports information directors or other minions vote for them.
My rankings are not necessarily based on style points. I take into consideration previous rankings, strength of opponent, home, away or neutral site victories and heart.
You may not always agree with my rankings, certainly they won’t be absurd like Craig’s NFL pre-season rankings where he has the Patriots ranked #27. No. I will be as fair and impartial as possible while basing all my rankings on the previous criteria.
This poll is for you, the tremendous fans of the Shemon and Sheppard Show. I hope you enjoy it.
