Justin Herbert agreed to a five-year, $262.5M extension with the Los Angeles Chargers on Tuesday with a $52.5M average annual value that’s the highest in NFL history, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The deal keeps Herbert with the Chargers through the 2029 season.
Herbert has had one of the best starts to a career the quarterback position has ever seen as the only player in NFL history to throw for 4,000 yards in each of his first 3 seasons.
That’s led Herbert to compile the most passing yards by more than 1,000 – of any player in their first 3 seasons in NFL history.
Herbert Fun Facts
Herbert and Peyton Manning are the only QBs to throw 25 touchdown passes in each of their first 3 seasons in NFL history. That’s added up to Herbert accounting for the 2nd-most passing touchdowns over a player’s first 3 seasons in the NFL, trailing only Dan Marino.
Since entering the NFL in 2020, Herbert has been one of the elite quarterbacks in the league across the board. Only Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady have averaged more passing yards per game since his rookie season.
Herbert holds 2 of the top 4 passing seasons in Chargers history in terms of yards, including a franchise-record 5,014 in 2021. He also had a franchise-best 38 passing touchdowns that same season.
Week 1 will mark Herbert’s 50th regular season game, and he is toward the top of some all-time lists for QBs in their first 50 appearances.
Herbert Versatility
Herbert has been pretty versatile in his young career, becoming one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL in a variety of situations. That can be highlighted by his NFL best 79.1 QBR when outside the pocket.
Herbert has thrown 40 pass TD to RB and TE since entering the league in 2020. That is the 2nd-most in the NFL during that span, trailing only Patrick Mahomes (58).
The Chargers will want to protect their new investment, something they have not done well thus far in his career. He is one of four quarterbacks to be hit on at least 300 plays over the last 3 seasons.
Herbert Handles Pressure
Herbert was pressured 238 times last season, the 2nd-most by any quarterback in one season since ESPN began tracking the stat in 2009 (Deshaun Watson, 263 in 2018). In total, he’s been pressured 681 times since entering the league, most in the NFL over that span.

Olivia ‘Livvy’ Dunne is Jaw-Droppingly Sizzling at ESPY Awards
U.S. gymnast and social media personality Olivia "Livvy" Dunne is one of the most popular women on social media in 2023. She has millions of followers and admirers online, and she's also one of the famed Sports Illustrated swimsuit models, having been featured in the magazine this year.
Dunne was at the ESPY Awards at Dolby Theatre on Wednesday (July 12) in Hollywood, California. She even posed for a photo with the one and only Mike Tyson. Check out fresh photos from the event below.
But, back to Sports Illustrated. When Dunne found out she was going to be in Sports Illustrated's coveted issue, she broke her privacy contract to tell one person: her mom. I don't think she got in trouble for it, so that's good. I couldn't keep it from my mom either. Frankly, it's adorable that Dunne is so close to her mom that she couldn't keep the news from her mom. It's also nice to see Dunne's mom being so supportive of her daughter's endeavors.
"As soon as I got off the phone, I was jumping up and down,” Dunne said in a video interview with SI Swim. “I called my mom, even though you’re not supposed to tell anyone right away. I had to tell my mom." Dunne and her mom were able to stay hush-hush until the issue was announced on April 27. Then, she took to her massive social channels to spread the world. Did you know that she has more than 11 million social media followers? She has more than 4.1 million followers on Instagram and more than 7.4 million TikTok followers. That's incredible. Those numbers, of course, make Dunne one of the most popular female athletes on social media. Even when you put her up against actors and rock stars, her numbers often come out on top.
