Tropical Storm Warning Issued for Charlotte County

The National Hurricane Center issued a tropical storm warning for Charlotte County in its 8 a.m., Nov. 9 update on Tropical Storm Nicole.

The storm’s track has shifted slightly south, bringing countywide chances of sustained tropical storm-force winds to 40% to 50%. The earliest reasonable arrival of tropical storm-force winds is 1 p.m. today. The most likely timing is overnight, with the strongest winds expected between midnight and 6 a.m. Rainfall is forecast to be between 2-4 inches through Friday.

Hazardous marine conditions will persist throughout this event. Tides are forecast to be 3-4 feet below normal tides in Charlotte Harbor and coastal beaches today and Thursday. The tides then predicted to be  1-3 feet above normal Thursday night and Friday as winds come onshore.

The Emergency Operations Center remains partially activated for Tropical Storm Nicole.

The county is aware of the potential that Ian debris could become wind-borne with the possibility of tropical storm-force winds. Residents should take necessary precautions such as securing loose items in your yard and shuttering windows and doors. Debris collection continues. As of 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, our debris contractor has picked up 1.45 million cubic yards of vegetative, construction and demolition debris.

Lee County officials today provided an update on Tropical Storm Nicole.

The anticipated impacts at this time, include the following.

    The county is cognizant that many residents are living in damaged homes because of Hurricane Ian or may be staying in RVs or tents on their property. The following shelter options will be available.   Alico Arena is now open as a shelter and is pet-friendly. It opened at 10 a.m. today.   North Fort Myers Recreation Center will open as a shelter at 7 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9, and will be pet friendly.  Please do not go there today, as it is a polling place.
