TOKYO, JAPAN – JULY 29: Sunisa Lee of Team United States poses with her gold medal after winning the Women’s All-Around Final on day six of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games at Ariake Gymnastics Centre on July 29, 2021 in Tokyo, Japan.

Even without Simone Biles, Team USA won the gold medal in all-around gymnastics in Tokyo. As The New York Times reports, Sunisa Lee won the gold in the all-around, which determines the best overall gymnast. As the Times noted, Lee "spent a lifetime aspiring to finish second to Simone Biles in the all-around because that was the best anyone could do, exceeded those expectations on Thursday night."

According to ESPN, Lee became the sixth American to win the gold medal in that category. And as the Times reports, she's the fifth American in a row to win it, following Carly Patterson in 2004, Nastia Liukin in 2008, Gabby Douglas in 2012 and Simone Biles in 2016.

But with Biles dropping out of the competition for personal reasons, Lee rallied to win the gold. CNN reported that Biles cheered her on from the stands.
