The world may be on fire, but true love wins out in the end. HBO Max officially announced over Twitter today that DC's Harley Quinn Season 3 is in the works. I have been an unabashed fan of this series since the first trailer dropped, and I could not be more excited about this. So let's take a moment to figure out where we're at, what we know, and what's coming next.
Harley Quinn Recapped (*SPOILER ALERT*)
For those who don't know, Harley Quinn first aired last fall with a 13 episode season. It stars Kaley Cuoco as the psychotic, but fun Harley Quinn. Lake Bell stars as her shockingly down to earth best friend Poison Ivy. Amazing cast members like Ron Funches, Alan Tudyk, and Tony Hale round out the main cast. Beyond that, the excellent voice casting is evident throughout the series.
Harley Quinn takes a comedic look at the Batman mythos, playing up many of the villains for laughs. It also managed to make compelling characters out of Kite Man, Killer Shark, and even Condiment King so props to the writers for that. Perhaps most importantly, it finally made good on the promise of Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy forming a relationship. It wasn't quick, however, slow-burning over two seasons before finally concluding with them falling for each other and driving off into the sunset Thelma and Louise style.
Where's it going to be and when?!
So one of the biggest changes so far is that the show is moving off DC Universe. This isn't too surprising, as much of the DCU original content is leaving the platform. HBO Max has picked up the series and wasted no time renewing it for the third season. We sadly do not have a release date or even a timeframe. One thing that is for certain is we're probably gonna be waiting a bit. Season 1 and 2 were written and recorded at almost the same time, so they released very close to one another.
Harley Quinn season 3 meanwhile is just getting into production, so we've probably got some time to wait. However, with most of the cast expected to return, it should be well worth the wait. Entertainment Weekly was able to talk to the creators and got two things confirmed. First, Kite Man will be back, but not in a romantic interest. Second, James Adomain will be back as Bane, and he will never die. These are both great things. Kite Man was a great character in the first two seasons and Adomain's Bane might be the best thing I've ever seen on screen.
The most important thing for me that showrunners Patrick Schumacker and Justin Halpern had to say was that the third season will be exploring Harley and Ivy's relationship. It'll be asking the question "what's it like to be in a good relationship after toxic ones?" As someone who was in a number of toxic relationships before meeting my soon-to-be wife, this hits very close to home. This has been my favorite show of the last few years and I am over the moon to get another season. Rest assured, we'll have more information for you here as it becomes available.
