PlayStation State of Play Presentation Announced for Later This Week

After rumors abounded over a new presentation or two (thanks to leaks on some dubious imageboard websites), Sony has confirmed a new PlayStation State of Play stream will take place this week.

The next State of Play will take place on Thursday, August 6th at 9 pm BST, which will focus on third-party and indie games coming to PS4, PS VR, and PS5. The stream itself will span over 40 minutes, which is promised to feature “plenty of new gameplay footage and other game updates”. Scary to include that “gameplay” mention, as that is exactly what Microsoft got torn apart for earlier this year during their presentations.

Interestingly, they make a point to dispel any hope of PS5 pricing details or first-party game updates, stating: “There will be no PlayStation Studios updates in Thursday’s episode.” The pricing of the system continues to be the biggest golden goose for the company, creating a tune-in occasion, just to see how much the dang thing is going to cost; stating upfront that it would not be featured in this presentation is an interesting way of dispelling that notion upfront.

This all leads to two major takeaways from this:

Sony sees the pain Nintendo has gone through when it comes to setting fans' expectations out of the gate. If you don’t do this, rumors and hopes abound, and the hype gets built up to a point where it will come crashing down under the weight of its own expectations out of the gate; which leads to NOBODY being happy.
The earlier rumors of an event on the sixth seem to have been confirmed, but does that mean that the larger and more involved event, which was rumored to take place on Aug.10th, will actually happen as well? And will it feature all of the supposed games that were looking to be featured in it?

This event will be nice. Sony seems to continually be the only company that can execute these massive presentations well and comes out the other side for the better as of now. Will it be earth-shattering? No. But that’s okay, right? From the sounds of it, we could likely hear details about the next Call of Duty title - considering Modern Warfare and Warzone Season 5 launches a day prior on 5th August. There also might be updates on Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, FIFA, and potentially other Ubisoft games like Watch Dogs Legion. And all of that is fine with me.
