Fortnite esports has been operating in something of a void for the last few months. In the year 2020, we've actually seen very little in the way of competitive Fortnite. But that appears to be coming towards an end. DreamHack has announced they'll be resuming their Fortnite tournaments, bearing a quarter-million-dollar prize pool, in July.
Fortnite Esports
Contrary to what many believe, Fortnite has not been the second coming of esports. Epic Games made a lot of noise last year when they proclaimed they would be pouring 100 million dollars into their esports prize pool. And to be fair, it really worked. A 30 million dollar prize at the World Championship last year made headlines around the world. You may recall that Bugha emerged victorious in that tournament at age 16, and took home 3 million dollars.
Since then though, Fortnite Esports has been rather quiet. Epic has remained silent about what their esports scene will look like in 2020 and beyond. However, third party organizations took up the mantle. DreamHack is one of the largest, but even they had been practically shuttered by the ongoing pandemic.
DreamHack Tournament Series
All of that comes to an end in July however. Starting with the tournament on July 17th, and running every month for the rest of 2020, there will be a $250,000 dollar open tournament. Players will be able to qualify for the tournament in the weeks leading up to the event, and all competitions will be held online.
Playing online has advantages and disadvantages of course. While it allows for an incredibly diverse talent pool, it also means that ensuring fair play is very difficult. Still, Fortnite has always been about being accessible to everyone. There's a comforting thought in the idea that any kid with a PC and an internet connection has a chance to win.
