Eagles quarterback Nick Foles wants to be a starting quarterback. It probably won’t be in Philadelphia. Despite back to back impressive post season efforts filling in for the injured Carson Wentz and earning a Super Bowl MVP award along the way, Foles appears destined to move on from the City of Brotherly Love.
It’s ironic because the team loves him, the city of Philadelphia loves him, and the feelings appear mutual.
But the team seems married to Wentz for the foreseeable future. The team has a $20 million dollar option on Foles for 2019, but Foles can buy himself out of the deal for a meager $2 millions.
If Foles does become a free agent it will be interesting to see how the market reacts. Every year the price for quarterbacks skyrockets. Just last year we saw an average quarterback like Kirk Cousins get $84 million dollars guaranteed. A desperate Broncos team paid big money for a sub-par Case Keenum. And with this years’ quarterback draft class looking thin, there’s no doubt Foles will command huge dollars. But buyer beware, Foles is an average quarterback who had a few good games in December and January when the world was watching. I’m concerned how he will perform from September through December each year under a monster deal. GM’s should take note. If not, just ask the Vikings if they have buyer’s remorse with Cousins.
