The US is Back!
The World Cup is just under 4 months away from starting. The US Men's National Team has been drawn into Group B along with England, Iran, and Wales. After not making the World Cup in 2018, the USMNT got a favorable draw. They're in a group with England, Iran, and Wales. There are definitely more difficult groups, but this young team can't take anything for granted. The team will be staying at "The Pearl Hotel" in Doha. This is a overly swanky hotel where the penthouse runs $16,500 a night! But what about the 8 stadiums hosting the 2022 World Cup?
Issues With Qatar Hosting
Qatar hosting a World Cup has many problems. The heat on the Arabian Peninsula in the summer months being the biggest gripe. Well, they addressed this by simply moving the tournament that has been in the summer for ever iteration to the winter. Basically all of the European domestic league's expressed dissatisfaction with this decision. But, when the alternative was man-made clouds, or changing the games to 3 30-minutes periods, there wasn't much of an option.
Qatar Innovation
Then there are the World Cup 2022 Stadiums, or lack there of. We've seen places like South Africa and Sochi build out massive infrastructures to host World Cups or Olympics, and they turn into eerie ghost towns once the athletes leave. Qatar soccer stadiums were basically non existent before the awarded the bid, but they've built 7 state of the art stadiums, and renovated another to create 8 unique stadiums for the November World Cup. I could do a whole post on the human rights issues that have been brought up in the building process, but I don't think I'm smart enough to lay all of that out in a coherent post. Let's take a look at the 8 stadiums hosting the 2022 World Cup.
