If you are still looking for a quick 4th getaway from Southwest Florida, there is a lot happening this week in Key West. If you think you've got the skills, consider entering an iconic eating competition while your there. Loosen your belt for the 4th of July Key Lime Pie Eating Contest.

The world-famous competition is the highlight of Key West's five-day long Key Lime Festival. The festival runs from July 3-July 7. There are all kinds of culinary events this week, however, the pie eating is the most popular. It is a spin-off on New York City's traditional hotdog eating contest.

About The 4th Of July Key Lime Pie Eating Contest

The contest is a timed race to consume a 9-inch Key Lime pie, topped with whipped cream. Oh, and contestants are not allowed to use their hands for assistance. It's face first shameless pie eating. However, dive masks and goggle are allowed.

Winners get trophy and championship belt, along with sweet fame and bragging rights for the year.

The fastest pie eating time was logged at a blistering 40:57 seconds. Yes, seconds. Last year's winner had a time of 3 minutes, 35 seconds. It was Joshua Mogle of Altoona, IA, People come from all over the world to participate in the contest.

Key lime pies are traditionally made with condensed milk, egg yolks and the juice of Key limes. All of that is held within a graham cracker crust and topped with whipped cream or meringue. 

The contest is on the beach of the Southernmost Beach Café on Duval Street. It kicks off at 1:30pm. The so-called Key Lime village opens at 11 with all kinds of other festivities, games and attractions. Admission to the competition is free.
