There's a pretty good chance you'll stumble across a sea turtle nest while walking on a Florida beach. But $ 4 Million of cocaine? Someone walking out on Amelia Island beach hoping to spot some sea turtle nests, found something else. Instead, they came upon 70 pounds of cocaine wrapped in plastic with an eagle emblem.
According to News4Jax, this stash, 32 kilos in total, is worth around a cool million in wholesale. But if you break it down for the streets, it's over $4 million of cocaine. That's some serious cash someone just let float ashore.
When people heard about this, they were blown away. Some just couldn’t wrap their head around it like, "What’s all this coke doing here?" Another tourist hunting for shark teeth, joked that their finds weren’t anywhere near as valuable as bricks of coke.
$4 Million of Cocaine Surprise:
Sure, finding drugs washed up on South Florida shores is not really anything new. Just a few days back, a video showed the US Border Patrol pulling 29 kilos of cocaine from the waters near the Florida Keys. The same eagle logo on those bricks too. Another boater down there found 65 pounds of coke floating around. But Amelia Island is way up in Northeast Florida, making this pretty rare.
Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper said it’s not something they see often. He recalled lots of weed washing up years ago, but $ 4 million of cocaine? That’s new territory for them.
The big question is, how did it end up here? Authorities think it got tossed overboard from a boat. I mean, if the Coast Guard is closing in, and whoever had the stash might be freaking out so they ditched it to avoid getting caught. Then, either Nemo finds it or the ocean currents do their thing and bring it to shore.
The next time you’re on the beach, keep your eyes peeled. You might find more than just shells and shark teeth. But, if you do stumble upon a suspicious package containing $ 4 million of cocaine, maybe call the cops before you start dreaming of becoming the next Scarface.
Two Florida Beaches Made List Of Best Beaches In America
Two Florida Beaches Made List Of Best Beaches In America
Living in Florida with so many beautiful beaches, it's shocking that only two beaches made a new list of the best beaches in America. We're so lucky here in SWFL to have Fort Myers Beach, Sanibel, Captiva, beaches in Naples, Bonita Springs, Marco Island and Boca Grande nearby. We may be a little partial to our area since it's home, but if you're looking for the best of the best, it looks like you may have to travel a few hours north.
Dr. Stephen Leatherman, a professor at Florida International University, is also known as Dr. Beach. He's also an author and scientist and his research has taken him to beaches all over the country. In fact, he's visited 650 major public beaches in the United States to determine the very best. Talk about a dream job! He was even featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show for having one of the best jobs in America. He just released his list of the best beaches in America.
Dr. Beach uses 50 different factors including sand softness, water temperature, number of sunny days, wildlife, views, amenities and noise. You can see the full list here, but below are the top 5.
The Top 5 Best Beaches in America, According to Dr. Beach:
5. LIGHTHOUSE BEACH, BUXTON, OUTER BANKS OF NORTH CAROLINA
This beach is the #1 surfing spot in the country on the Atlantic coast. Also, parking is convenient located close to the beach and it's an easy walk to the water.
4. CALADESI ISLAND STATE PARK, DUNEDIN/CLEARWATER, FLORIDA
This beach is one of my favorites. I make sure to take a trip up here at least once a year. You can only get to Caladesi by boat, but if you don't have your own, there is a ferry that will take you out there. You'll enjoy white sugar sand and super clear water.
3. COOPERS BEACH, SOUTHAMPTON, NEW YORK
Coopers Beach is on the south shore of Long Island, New York. You'll find white quartz sand with sand dunes covered by beach grass.
2. DUKE KAHANAMOKU BEACH, OAHU, HAWAII
Kahanamoku Beach is on the west end of Waikiki Beach. Not only will you find a wide beach, but it's also protected by an offshore coral reef so it's great for families with kids. This beach offers great views of the Diamondhead volcano as well.
1. ST GEORGE ISLAND STATE PARK, FLORIDA PANHANDLE
If you're looking for clear water and sugary white sand, look no further than St. George Island. Covering nearly 2,000 acres, this is a favorite for beach lovers, fishermen and nature enthusiasts.
