Once you've finished decorating your living space, crafted some holiday gifts and decorations, and organized your party, you may want to set aside a few days to unwind before Christmas arrives. For many, the holiday season is about spending quality time with friends and family and taking a break.

There are several destinations where you can take a short getaway to recharge, do some Christmas shopping, or relax. These places offer beautiful scenery, charming inns, and a unique small-town atmosphere. This year, if you're considering a getaway, House Beautiful magazine has compiled a list of festive Christmas towns in the U.S.

Florida's St. Augustine makes the list.

St. Augustine secures its place at number 18 on the list. The magazine highlights the town's ability to offer both sunshine and festive holiday decor throughout its streets. The town hosts an annual event known as the "Nights of Lights" festival, turning St. Augustine into a large holiday display. According to information from the Visit Augustine website, this much-anticipated festival begins on November 18 and extends until January 31. The 30th annual Nights of Lights invites visitors to immerse themselves in the "warm radiance" of over 3 million lights. While also diving into the rich historical background of St. Augustine.

During this seasonal display, downtown businesses extend their operating hours, enabling guests to enjoy dining among the luminous surroundings and explore the festively decorated buildings. Special seasonal tours, featuring trains and trolleys are also available.

According to the tourist website, the tradition of "Nights of Lights" in St. Augustine can be traced back to the Spanish practice of placing a white candle in windows during the Christmas holidays. They note that "the stunning lights not only pay homage to the city's more than 450-year history but also illuminate the picturesque cityscape, creating cherished holiday memories."
