The first Fort Myers Beach Hotel reopens since Hurricane Ian destroyed the island on September 28th. DiamondHead Beach Resort opens its doors today, however, not to tourists. The shelter is primarily being offered to first responders, emergency and construction workers and relief personnel. In addition, beach residents who are displaced can book a room.
A three night minimum is required. The elevators are working and there is WiFi. The pool and beach remain closed. The area is still a construction zone. The entire beach is. 97% of structures on the beach were destroyed or damaged. That's a lot to come back from.
Many residents have stayed on the island since the storm. Some are living in tents on lots that used to hold their homes. Others are camping out underneath their damaged homes, getting power from generators. Access to simple comforts such as a shower and a bed is a big deal.
More Fort Myers Beach hotels are opening.
The first Fort Myers Beach Hotel reopens since Hurricane Ian and a second is following suit in just days. The Pink Shell Beach Resort, the largest full service resort on Fort Myers Beach, plans to open December 19th. However, just like Diamond Head, the lodging is reserved for relief and construction workers. In addition, island residents who need a break can book a room. The Pink Shell is requiring a two night minimum and there are limits on the number of guest per room. Amenities are limited and the elevators are not working yet.
While there have been great improvements, the beach still looks like a warzone. It's heartbreaking. However, these small things are big steps in recovery. Slowly but surely.
