Buccaneers and Dolphins Lose and Playoff Drama Thickens
Buccaneers and Dolphins lose and playoff drama thickens during week 14 in the NFL
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Miami Dolphins both came up short in their respective road contests on Sunday. Here’s a recap of what happened:
DOLPHINS COULD NOT CONTAIN HERBERT
Justin Herbert threw for a season high 367 yards Sunday against the Dolphins. Herbert was flushed from the pocket repeatedly by the Dolphins pressure but was able to make plays regardless. He finished the game with 164 yards passing from outside the pocket, a career high and the most by any QB in a game this season.
Justin Herbert Passing Outside Pocket Sunday
Comp-Att 10-11
Yards 164
TD 1
Career high, most by QB in 2022
Herbert has now thrown an NFL-high 7 touchdown passes from outside the pocket this season.
TUA TAGOVAILOA STRUGGLED BIG TIME
Tua Tagovailoa finished the game 10-of-28 (35.7%), the lowest completion percentage in a game in his career (min. 5 att). He struggled to stretch the field throughout the game, completing only 1-of-9 passes thrown 15 or more yards downfield, though that was a 60-yard TD. Entering the game Tagovailoa had completed 63.0% of those throws, best in the NFL (min. 20 att).
Tagovailoa finished 3-of-13 (23%) with at least 2.5 seconds to throw, the worst completion percentage by any player in a game on those throws this season (min. 10 attempts). Miami currently would be the 6th seed in the AFC if the playoffs started today. However, they would have a one game lead over the 7th seed which right now would be the Chargers. However, if the Patriots win tonight in Arizona they would take over the 7th spot.
Miami concludes their 3 game road trip next week in Buffalo against the AFC East leading Bills. Should they lose that one, Chris is going to spontaneously combust on the show!
TOM BRADY’S HOMECOMING RUINED BY BROCK PURDY AND THE 49ERS
Brock Purdy led the 49ers to a convincing 35-7 win in his first career start against Tom Brady and the Buccaneers. Purdy had 2 Pass TD and a Rush TD, and became the first QB to defeat Brady in his first career start (previously 0-7). Purdy’s 28-point win was the 2nd-largest out of 134 QBs who made their first career start against an MVP-winning QB, trailing only Brady himself (beat Peyton Manning by 31 in his first start in 2001). The 49ers have won 7 games by 15+ points, tied for their 2nd-most in a season behind only the 1994 campaign (won 9 games by that margin en route to winning the Super Bowl).
Tampa Bay incredibly still leads the NFC South with a 6-7 record however Carolina and Atlanta are only a game back at 5-8.
