Video: The Coast Guard is Airlifting Survivors Off Sanibel Island

Sanibel Island

SANIBEL, FLORIDA – SEPTEMBER 29: In this aerial view, a Coast Guard helicopter flies over the island as search and rescue efforts continue after Hurricane Ian passed through the area on September 29, 2022 in Sanibel, Florida. The hurricane brought high winds, storm surge and rain to the area causing severe damage. (Photo by Joe Raedle/Getty Images)

Hurricane Ian has completely cut off Sanibel Island from Fort Myers. Survivors who chose to ride out the storm are currently being rescued by helicopter. The Coast Guard is doing these amazing rescues right now.

Absolutely crazy what these people must have gone through as Hurricane Ian ripped through our area. The fact that they're still alive is a miracle.

Here's some pictures of the destruction in Sanibel Island, taken yesterday. I'm not sure, really, what's still standing. The lighthouse somehow survived. As for Captiva, I hear that the Bubble Room is still there. Please visit our Hurricane Ian Relief and Recovery Page.
