A Tampa man was arrested on Sunday after plotting an ISIS mass shooting, according to The Tampa Bay Times.
Muhammed Momtaz Al-Azhari was charged after attempting to buy various guns and material. He was able to acquire a Glock pistol and silencer prior to his arrest.
The 23-year old is being charged with attempting to provide material support and resources to a foreign terrorist organization, announced Wednesday by the Department of Justice.
According to sources, he expressed his “admiration” for the Pulse nightclub shooter, the 2016 mass shooting that was responsible for the deaths of 49 people and injuring 53 others.
He would often visit the site of the shooting, even once telling a confidential informant, “I want to die in a shootout with disbelievers. I want to take revenge. I don’t want to take [kill] four or five, I want to take at least fifty, like brother Omar Mateen in Orlando did.”
He was scouting for potential targets around the Tampa area, including Honeymoon Island and Hard Rock Hotel.
According to the FBI reports, he served three years in prison in Saudi Arabian prison after attempting to join a terrorist group. The US citizen was then sent back to the United States in 2018. In April he wound up on the FBI radar after attempting to buy a gun silencer on Ebay.
At the time of the arrest, the police found Al-Azhari’s iPhone which had self-shot videos of him showing off guns, joked of killing people and announcing his support for the Islamic terrorist group.
