Earlier in 1979, Magic Johnson's Michigan State Spartans defeated Larry Bird's Indiana State Sycamores in the NCAA men's basketball championship. Their one game rivalry continued into their professional careers when Magic went to the Lakers and Bird headed to their arch rival Celtics. Both players dominated the league and they both won numerous championships. Many of those championships came in head-to-head play.
