The pumpkin patches are open all over Southwest Florida. They are still full so you can find the perfect size and shape for your Halloween Jack-O-Lantern. To help with this year's designs, here are 5 artful inspirations for pumpkin carving and for TikTok Tuesday.

Carving pumpkins is a favorite family past time of mine and millions of Americans. My dad was a great artist. He drew out his designs on the giant gourds and carved with precision. It's a skill that was not passed down to me, sadly. I'm more of a freestyle hacker. But somehow, it always works.

I still carve pumpkins every year and make it an event. I throw tarps and plastic on the floor, have friends over and make a huge mess. As part of the fun, we collect the pumpkin seeds and try to roast them while we continue to carve.

At the end, we line all of the pumpkins up on the counter, put candles in them and turn off the lights to a chorus of "ooohs" and "aaaahs". I can't wait to do it again.

Artful Inspirations For Pumpkin Carving

Every year I have a pumpkin party where my neighbors and their kids gather for seasonal fun. We are always looking for inspirations for pumpkin carving and it can get competitive. Photo: Gina Birch

I recently posted some videos of recipes using pumpkin spice. A couple of them would make great snacks to enjoy while you are carving your pumpkins. I like the pinwheel idea. Click here if you missed them.

If you don’t have a TikTok account, don’t worry. I’ve made it easy to view the videos by taking these links from mine. Simply scroll down and watch from this post. Share this with friends who are getting ready to carve their gourds and try some new designs this year.

Creative Use Of Vegetables

This is so cool. Use potatoes to make great eyeballs for your pumpkins. Carrots too. It takes a little work but looks so good when finished.

More Ways To Use Potatoes For Your Pumpkin

Besides eyes, those potatoes can be used to make teeth. Long fangs in this instance. Add a little lemon juice to them to keep them white, unless brown teeth are part of the design.

Designs To Preserve Pumpkins

Once you carve those babies, they don't last long in Florida. This way may just preserve their integrity a little longer while still giving you some cool looks.

Fun With Pumpkins

These aren't the most artistic. However, these kinds of designs are sometimes the most fun. They don't take a lot of time either.

Pumpkin Cleaning Hack

Finally, I have to share this cleaning hack. Some people love scraping and scooping out the guts. But it can get tedious. I never thought about doing this and might just try it this year.
