VIDEO: Remembering Hurricane Ian One Year After The Category 4 Storm Hit SWFL
As we approach the one year anniversary of Hurricane Ian making landfall in Southwest Florida, we reflect on the effects it had on our area for the last year.
Hurricane Ian came roaring onto Southwest Florida’s Gulf Coast on September 28, 2022. This Thursday, September 28, 2023 marks the one year anniversary of the storm and the damage caused all across Southwest Florida.
Remembering Hurricane Ian
Charlotte County’s local government access channel has premiered a nine-minute video titled, “Remembering Hurricane Ian.” The video can be viewed below. You will also see the video played on CC-TV, Comcast channel 20, intermittently throughout the coming months.
The video, produced by Emmy Award-winning Television Production Specialist Tom Lloyd, depicts footage of the hurricane, storm damage, relief efforts and interviews with government officials and local residents.

Lloyd is a 1994 graduate of Charlotte High School. He served in the U.S. Army, Army Reserves and National Guard for 16 years from 2002-2017. He graduated from Rasmussen College in 2014. He has worked as a photojournalist for numerous Southwest Florida television stations for 27 years until joining Charlotte County in 2018.

Fort Myers Beach is absolutely destroyed. Our entire Southwest Florida area is reeling from Hurricane Ian. Most of us are without power and internet. We have limited cell and text messaging available. Many of you reading this are from outside of our area, so if can help:

Hurricane Ian made landfall near Cayo Costa, an island off the coast of Fort Myers, just after 3 p.m. on Wednesday. With Ian, came 150 mph winds, the fifth-strongest hurricane to make landfall in the U.S. According to ABC News, "Ian then made a second landfall 90 minutes later, still as a Category 4 storm with 145 mph winds, just south of Punta Gorda, near Pirate Harbor."
While the efforts to restore Fort Myers Beach will be a years long recovery, our whole area is suffering greatly. The causeway to Sanibel collapsed and the docks sustained heavy damage, making the island only accessible by helicopter. There's some areas where we don't even know yet the extent of the damage.
We will rebuild. But this is going to take a long time.
