Lee County Is One Of The Most Dangerous Places To Drive In Florida – Charlotte County Is One Of The Safest

Lee County is bad for car crahes

Seminole County is the most dangerous place to drive in Florida, according to a new study.  Lee County is not far behind.

The study, conducted by personal injury attorneys Injured in Florida, analyzed Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles data to reveal the number of crashes in each county in Florida that have occurred so far in 2023.

The data was gathered to determine the number of crashes that occur for every 10,000 people in each county.

Seminole County is at the top of the list of most dangerous places to drive in Florida. Compared to other counties with a larger population, Seminole County experienced 2,369 crashes between January 2023 and May 2023, resulting in 22 fatalities. This equates to 119 crashes per 10,000 residents, making it the most dangerous place to drive in Florida.

Hamilton County comes second, with 104 crashes for every 10,000 residents. The county has a population of 13,217 and experienced a total of 137 crashes from the beginning of the year to May; however, these crashes only resulted in one fatality.

Duval County is the third most dangerous place to drive in Florida. Duval County has a population of 1,016,536 and experienced 9,051 total crashes. This equates to 89 crashes per 10,000 residents. The total number of crashes resulted in 65 fatalities this year.

Miami-Dade County, the county with the most significant population throughout Florida, is the fourth most dangerous place to drive. The county has a population of 2,673,837 and has experienced 23,245 total crashes between January 2023 and May 2023. Per 10,000 residents, there have been 87 crashes, as well as a total of 149 deaths, making it the county with the highest death toll due to motor vehicle crashes.

The fifth most dangerous place to drive in Florida is Madison County, that experienced a total of 156 crashes between January 2023 and May 2023. The county has a population of 18,198 and this equates to 86 crashes per 10,000 residents. The total number of crashes also resulted in six deaths.

In Southwest Florida, Sarasota County ranks 7th with 79 crashes per 10,000 residents. Lee County is 9th with 76 crashes per 10,000 residents. Collier County ranks 22nd in the state with 2,626 total crashes, or an average of 66 per 10,000 residents.

Scrolling waaaaaay down past Lee County and Collier, we find Charlotte County. They have 202,661 residents with 488 crashes so far this year. That's an average of 24 crashes per 10,000 residents. That ranks them at 66 with only Lafayette County after. No one really lives in Lafayette County, so that might explain their lack of crashes.

So in the list of most vehicle crashes per capita per county in Florida - Sarasota is 7th, and Lee County is 9th. But Charlotte  is 66th.

2023 Southwest Florida Fourth Of July Holiday Guide

The effects of Hurricane Ian are still being felt across Southwest Florida as we make Fourth Of July plans. I spent so many July 4ths down on Fort Myers Beach. I'd hang out around Times Square and then fireworks over the pier. Not this year. Same goes for Naples.

Naples has also postponed their fireworks. They plan to do a fireworks show in December. Since so many of their beach access points are closed that also makes sense.  Since that's not longer an option, what is?

The Fourth falls on a Tuesday, let's just call it one long weekend. If you've got a single personal day or vacation day you can use, July 3rd would be a good one. So we'll include some events on the weekend prior to the Fourth.

There's some unique events on this list you may not have heard of. And for those of you who like to get up early on holidays and run a 5k, those are here, too. If I missed one, let me know. I intentionally left off the Sydney & Berne Davis Art Center event since tickets are so pricey. You'd be better off heading down to Sky King and buying your own display. I think most of San Carlos Park does this.

2023 is a weird year for us as we continue to rebuild. With less events, it's possible that the remaining outdoor fireworks shows will be more crowded than you are used to. Have a great 4th of July everyone!
