Here's what you should do and not do when you are invited to a house Super Bowl party. Super Bowl 57 is only 6 days away as of this posting. I know that many of you are going to host a party at your home or are going to one of your friends homes for the big bash. I'll be in Fort Myers. Here's my list of do's and don'ts if you are headed out to a house party.
The Don'ts
Whatever dish you bring, and you better bring one, make sure it's ready to go when you get there. If necessary, let the host or hostess at the house party know that you may need to use their oven to heat up a particular dish.
Don't assume that you are going to be able to use your friends oven when you arrive. Most Super Bowl house parties I have attended in years past have been between 10-25 people attending. The host or hostess of the party I promise you will be heating up other items before and during right up until game time.
Don't get obliterated before kickoff. The Super Bowl will kickoff about 6:18pm this Sunday night. Most house parties ask their guests to arrive well before that, say between 4 and 5pm. That does not mean you have to drink yourself into oblivion before. Pace yourselves with eating and drinking and you will have a much better time.
Don't be "That Guy or That Girl" at the Super Bowl Party
You all know what and who I am talking about. This subject has come up many times on the Shemon and Sheppard Show in our almost 6 years together.
In case you don't know, let me break down the scenario for you. The game has started and you can already tell who is going to aggravate you based on their interest or lack there of for the game. If you don't care, get out of the main "living "room or wherever the biggest tv is in the house and go yak away with the other people who don't care.
Don't ask the hosts or guests any stupid questions while the game is going on. It's fine to cheer, heckle, cuss a little at the ref, or discuss a play or two during the game with your friends. However, there always seems to be that one "guy" or "girl" that wants to fit in with the main group so badly, they try to pretend to know more than they actually do and that leads to stupid questions.
What Qualifies As A Stupid Question?
How do you get a first down? What does "illegal touching" mean? How come the clock keeps running when the player steps out of bounds? What is the meaning of life? I could go on and on but you all know where I'm coming from. Go by a "football for dummies" book and read it cover to cover before kickoff.
Don't ask the host or serious guests any question that starts with "What do you think.." NO! I'm not going to answer that generic question. What I would love to say is "I think you are asking too many stupid questions and you should go back to the "B" room and rethink your life." How about that?
The Super Bowl Party Do's
This is very simple. Bring the host or hostess of the house party a dish or two or at least some booze. Try and coordinate with other guests if possible so you don't double up. All my friends that I hang with for various football parties are excellent at this. There is nothing worse than arriving at a house party there there are 10 pizza's and 50 pounds of wings.
The Super Bowl is like an official holiday. Have fun! Try to bring at least one dish, after coordinating, that represent that particular city participating in the game. For example, some sort of Philly cheese steak dish. Doesn't have to be a sandwich necessarily but a variation of it would be cool. On the Kansas City side, maybe a cool type of barbeque dish. If need be, ask the host in advance if you can you use his grill otherwise make sure it's at least at room temp or warmer when you arrive.
Pace yourselves eating and drinking and everyone will have a good time. Hopefully the game is a good one and the only time all year I semi pay attention to commercials, hoping they are entertaining. Enjoy Super Bowl 57 kids!
