It's an annual battle. Thanksgiving sides versus main courses. Which do you prefer? According to the folks at Campbell's, 66% of Americans prefer side dishes to the main course. They've done all kinds of research and have released their "State of the Side" report on Thanksgiving. Some of the statistics might surprise you.
When you think about it, the traditional turkey is great, however, you never know when you'll sit down to one that is dry and overcooked. That's always a little disappointing, especially for the person who went to the time and effort to cook it. Then there are the turkey disasters of forgetting to thaw it out or leaving the giblets in the birds cavity. In these instances, it's always the side dishes to the rescue.
And there's nothing quite like a ham with that sweet crust around it. However, watch anyone around a Thanksgiving table, and their eyes almost always light up over the arrival of side dishes, not the hunk of meat.
In addition, that hunk of meat is getting more expensive. This report finds that 52% of American's who plan to serve turkey as the main course, are buying a small bird this year. As far as the side dishes, the average table has five. Mine always has more than that but it also depends on how many people are joining.

Considering the top two sides on this list, Campbell's goes a step further to find out that when given a choice, Floridians prefer stuffing over mashed potatoes. Thank god we don't really have to choose. Give me a big scoop of both please.
