Paul Sorvino, ‘Goodfellas’ and ‘Law & Order’ Actor, Dies at 83

Paul Sorvino, the seasoned actor best known for his roles in Goodfellas and Law & Order, has died. He was 83.

Sorvino's death was confirmed in a statement from his wife, Dee Dee, who said, "Our hearts are broken, there will never be another Paul Sorvino, he was the love of my life and one of the greatest performers to ever grace the screen and stage." The Hollywood Reporter noted his publicist, Roger Neal, said the actor died at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Fla.

Sorvino is the father of Academy Award-winning actress Mira Sorvino who said in a brief statement via Twitter, "My father the great Paul Sorvino has passed. My heart is rent asunder- a life of love and joy and wisdom with him is over. He was the most wonderful father. I love him so much. I’m sending you love in the stars Dad as you ascend."

Sorvino's career spans six decades across film, television and the stage. In the early '70s, Sorvino notably earned a Tony Nomination for his performance of Phil Romano in That Championship Season, which he'd reprise when the play was adapted into the 1982 film that also starred Bruce Dern, Stacy Keach, Robert Mitchum and Martin Sheen.

Sorvino's most popular role came with his portrayal of Paul Cicero in Martin Scorsese's 1990 film Goodfellas, which was nominated for Best Picture at the 1991 Academy Awards.

Shortly after Goodfellas, Sorvino would serve as Sergeant Phil Cerreta on Law & Order for one season from 1991-92. Other notable credits include 1995's Nixon, 1996's Romeo + Juliet and 1997's Money Talks.
