Federal Judge Stops Sports Betting In Florida

March Madness Viewing Party At The Westgate Las Vegas

Just a few weeks ago a new app called Hard Rock Sportsbook was launched by the Seminole Tribe, but now a federal judge has put a stop to sports betting in Florida.

The app allowed for Floridians to place bets on sporting events anywhere in the state from a smart phone or other device using money from PayPal or Venmo.

Now, a federal judge has intervened, saying the app is illegal because it allows gamblers to make bets when they are not on Indian property.

Even though sports betting became legal in Florida in October under a gaming compact signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Chairman of the Seminole Tribe, the judge says the app violates federal Indian gaming law.

The judge also reinstated a previous pact with the Seminole Tribe that is to be extended through 2030, but if a new gaming compact can be agreed on between the state of Florida and the Tribe, online betting could still happen, as long as the activity occurs while on tribal land.
