tiger test positive for coronavirus

A tiger at the Bronx zoo in New York has tested positive for COVID-19.

This is believed to be the first known infection animal case in the U.S. federal officials said in a statement on Sunday.

Malayan the tiger, 4, and six other tigers and lions are also ill. The exotic animals may have been infected by a zoo employee, according to ABC News.

The report states that the first animal started showing symptoms on March 27th. The zoo closed earlier in the month amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The American Veterinary Medical Association and the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have recommended that out of an abundance of caution, people ill with the coronavirus should limit contact with animals.

The USDA said Sunday it’s not recommending routine coronavirus testing of animals.
