What’s In A Name?

The name game popped up twice in sports this week.  First, we learned 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan named his son after rapper Lil’ Wayne.  Yes, THAT Lil’ Wayne.  Apparently Shanahan is obsessed with Wayne’s music.  He plays it all the time in the team locker room.  Now, full disclosure here, but Shanahan’s son’s name is actually Carter.  Lil’ Wayne’s real name is Dwayne Michael Carter Jr.  Eventually, Wayne heard about this and sent coach and his kid some signed swag.

The second name story this week involved Lebron James and his 14 year old basketballer Lebron Jr.  Lebron Sr. admitted this week he should not have named his kid after himself.  There’s no way Jr. can live up to his dad’s legend on the basketball court.

Sr. and Jr. combos in sports haven’t been all bad though.  It worked out for the Griffeys, the Nortons, and the Earnhardts, among others.

It probably doesn’t matter what name you are given at birth.  It’s what you do with it afterward that counts.
