Moon day is here. Do you know what it is? July 20 is the anniversary of the Moon Landing in 1969. I was a baby at the time but my parents said I watched it on TV with a billion other people around the world. President Nixon remembered the anniversary in 1971 by declaring July 20th Moon Day.
People were fascinated by the Apollo Space program and watched the first few moon landings on live TV. Then, sadly, people got used to the idea and it was no longer a novelty. Fewer and fewer people took notice of later space flights until the drama of Apollo 13 in 1970, when an onboard malfunction not only forced its crew to abort their plans of landing on the moon, there was the real possibility the crew would not be able to return to earth. However, after a lot of really smart people put their heads together the crew was able to return safely. It is all documented in the Tom Hanks movie Apollo 13. I highly recommend it!
