Barrier islands in Southwest Florida continue to clear out. The latest, Sanibel residents ordered to evacuate the island their beloved island by 10pm tonight, Tuesday.

In addition, there will be a 24-hour curfew on Sanibel beginning at 10pm. The island is still limping along in recovery efforts two-years falling Hurricane Ian. Many homes and businesses also took on water when Hurricane Helene hit less than two weeks ago.

A few things to remember as you are preparing to leave Sanibel or anywhere else in Southwest Florida for Hurricane Milton. First, secure your home before you leave.

When shoring up your home, sandbags have been in short supply. Sand has too. However, trucks were working to replenish that sand at the fire station so be sure to check before you head out.

Next, be sure to take essential items for all family members. Shelters do not have supplies you might need. Some of those items to pack include:

  • Medicine
  • Important Papers
  • Personal Items
  • Clothing
  • Baby Supplies
  • Pet Supplies
  • Cash

Sanibel Residents Ordered To Evacuate With Pets

If you have a pet, double check that the shelter you are going to accepts them. Then don't forget to pack these items:

  • Water and food bowls
  • Medications
  • Pet care items
  • Pet food and water (at least two weeks worth)
  • Proper identification
  • Medical records/microchip info/vaccination papers
  • A carrier or cage
  • Muzzle and leash
