Today is National Cereal Day! What is your favorite breakfast cereal to start your day? Until the late 1860's eggs, bacon and sausage dominated the breakfast table in America. Then people looked for healthier alternatives and cooked cereals like porridges, Oats, and Cream of Wheat populated the kitchen. In the 1890's John Kellogg boiled some wheat and accidentally left it out overnight and found it stale the next morning. But then he rolled it and made flakes. He did the same thing with corn and the same thing happened and he created Corn Flakes.
Over the years, the cereal industry added sugars, flavors, and vitamins and nutrients to their products. Cereal is the most popular breakfast in America today. It's quick and easy. It is also a product that is mired in fierce advertising campaigns to grab your kid's attention. So what is your favorite? And is it much different than your favorite as a child? You probably liked something super-sweet back then. To celebrate National Cereal Day we have a cereal brand quiz on ESPN Southwest Florida's Craig Shemon and Company!
