Have you ever named a pet after a rock star, a movie star or a cartoon character? Perhaps you've chosen a celebrity or sports star that has a tie to Southwest Florida. A friend of mine named her boxer "Big Papi" after Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz. She met him during Spring Training in Fort Myers and has a great time yelling the dog's name during walks around the neighborhood. Can't you just hear it? The team at TrustedHousesitters analyzed over 50,000 pet names registered in their house sitting platform. They looked for the most popular movie inspired pet names in the nation and put together this list.

- Marley – “Marley & Me”
- Remy – Disney’s “Ratatouille”
- Koda – Disney’s “Brother Bear”

- Lady – Disney’s “Lady and the Tramp”
- Simba – Disney’s “Lion King”
- Gizmo – “Gremlins”
“While working with pets and pet owners across the country for over 14 years, I’ve always been exposed to the up-and-coming popular names,” said TrustedHousesitters Head of Community Angela Laws. She expects names like Barbie and Ken will be popular this year. However, she also says, "I think we’ll see even more pet names with a more subtle ‘Barbie’ influence, with pet owners choosing names like ‘Allan’ and ‘Margot.’”
Don't forget movies like “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” “Wonka,” and “Oppenheimer.” Laws thinks we might be seeing more “Mario,” “Luigi,” “Willy,” and “Wonka” names at the neighborhood dog park.
If you don't have a pet or are looking for one to add to your family, there is an adoption event coming up at the Gulf Coast Humane Society. I really like the motto "Adopt Don't Shop." So many great dogs and cats are at shelters and need a home. Now you can have some fun with those pet names.
The Army Corps Of Engineers Has a 2024 Calendar Of Giant Cats And Infrastructure
After last year's success, they had to do it again. The Army Corps Of Engineers just released their 2024 calendar of giant cats and infrastructure. Last year was crazy. The calendar was an internet sensation, going beyond just being viral on the internet to being featured on tv talk shows. If you somehow missed the fun of last year's post, here's the link to the OG Cats Attacking Infrastructure.
The Portland District, US Army Corps of Engineers decided to time the release of their calendar with National Cat Day. Actually, they teased the release on the holiday, and then dropped the calendar the day after. This year's calendar appears to have a gentler approach. Last year, a lot of the giant cats appeared to be trying to destroy infrastructure. In this years print, the cats seem a lot more content to just lounge on top of vital government projects. I applaud the decision. You don't want to just do the same project twice.
Also new to this year is a dog calendar. That's right, they did two calendars. The dog versions has pups riding in ships, looking after the dams, and running through locks. A solid piece of work, but we all know that the internet is obsessed with giant cats. That's why we're here.
