Sanibel has come a long way after Hurricane Ian and to encourage locals to continue supporting businesses on the island, tolls will continue to be waived another few weeks on Sundays.
I love going out to Sanibel. I live right on the other side of the bridge in Fort Myers, so the drive across the causeway doesn't take much time at all. And even if it did, the drive is so beautiful. And just a short ride can make me feel like I'm on vacation. I try to go out there as often as I can. Relaxing on the many beautiful beaches on the island is one of my favorite things to do. Both Sanibel and Captiva islands suffered great damage from the hurricane. But even so, things are really coming along as businesses are reopening, and they need our support.
25 restaurants have reopened on Sanibel and Captiva islands, and with the tolls being waived the last few Sundays for the "Savor the Shore" campaign, more people have been heading out to enjoy all they have to offer. For SWFL residents, while the drive isn't too far, the $6 toll could be what's holding people back, so now there's no excuse.
Sanibel is extending waived tolls on Sundays
Fox4 reports that tolls on the Sanibel Causeway will be continue to be waived on Sundays through September 24. Whether you want some good pizza, a beach day or enjoy the Island Hopper Music Festival, this is a great way to get over to the islands and save money on the toll to spend elsewhere.
25 Restaurants Are Now Open On Sanibel And Captiva Islands
It's hard to believe Hurricane Ian hit almost a year and a half ago and while we still have a long way to go, more than 25 restaurants are now open on Sanibel and Captiva Islands.
I've been spending a lot time on our local beaches. I love that here in Southwest Florida, even when there's nothing to do, there's something to do. And that something for me, is always heading to the beach. I usually head to Sanibel to either Bowman's Beach or Tarpon Bay Beach. I love Gulfside City Park too, but rarely do I make it out early enough to get a parking spot. It's been SO nice seeing all the people out enjoying the beaches, it's been busy nearly every weekend.
There's also a lot of businesses reopening too. Between lodging, restaurants, shopping, and things to do like kayaking and fishing charters. I will say that driving around out there just breaks your heart. It's not so much that there's debris everywhere, it just looks very bare and to see huge homes and condo complexes just crumbling, is so sad. Slowly but surely though, things are reopening and the island is welcoming visitors back out to the islands to stay, play and dine. You can find a full list of open businesses here
