Deadline Today For Hurricane Ian Debris Cleanup In Fort Myers

Hurricane Ian Debris

There is a deadline today for Hurricane Ian debris cleanup in Fort Myers. It's been more than four months since the deadly storm hit Southwest Florida. Drive anywhere in Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Naples and parts inland and you still see the signs. The islands, they are still devastated. That being said, there has been a lot of  progress in the cleanup. Especially when considering how much was damaged. The push to remove debris and also repair what is left, is full steam ahead for many.

Debris removal is still a major issue following Hurricane Ian

Hurricane Ian Debris

It is estimated that Hurricane Ian debris, in Lee County alone, covers more than 10 million cubic yards. The deadline for many neighborhoods to put their debris by the curb has come and gone. Today's deadline is for the following areas:

  • Pine Island, Waterway Estates
  • Fort Myers Shores, Iona/McGregor
  • Island Park, Cypress Lake
  • Captiva

However, if you are on Sanibel Island, you have until the 20th to get debris to the curb. Putting all debris on the curb helps with the special pick ups that are needed to haul everything away. It is a coordinated effort to not only pick up, but also find a place to put all of the debris. You have probably seen the massive, double stacked trucks with giant claws all over Southwest Florida. The clean up effort has been unprecedent  for our area.

The Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) is still offering help with debris. They are also helping to reunite some residents with lost property. If you still need some help, it might be worth contacting them. Click here to get more information. Perhaps you are still missing a car or boat. Then again, you might have a random car or boat on your property after all of this time. The FDEM might be able to help.
