Here is an update on NASCAR driver Kyle Busch arrest in Mexico in January for handgun possession. The two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion was arrested and held in January after a handgun was found in his bag. Busch along with his wife Samantha were vacationing then boarded a private jet to leave the country.
What Happened?
Kyle Thomas B, a man originally from Nevada was "credited with full responsibility in the commission of the crime of carrying a firearm without a license and possession of cartridges for the exclusive use of the armed forces. You can read more about it here.
Busch was arrested on January 27th according to the prosecutors general's office. He was sentenced to 3 and half years in prison on Monday and fined 1,100 dollars. It is still unknown how Busch's sentence will play out.
In a recent statement, the 37 year old Busch said "this issue is closed". He also finished 3rd in Sunday night's NASCAR Clash exhibition race. Busch also said in the same statement that he was not aware of the Mexican law that forbids the possession of a weapon without Mexican approval. He also said that he does "adhere to all handgun laws"
Busch's Full Statement
“In late January, Samantha and I enjoyed a several day vacation in Mexico,” Busch said. “When departing the country, my handgun was flagged during routine screening at the airport. I have a valid concealed carry permit from my local authority and adhere to all handgun laws, but I made a mistake by forgetting it was in my bag.
“Discovery of the handgun led to my detainment while the situation was resolved. I was not aware of Mexican law and had no intention of bringing a handgun into Mexico.”
According to the prosecutor general, Busch’s handgun had six hollow point cartridges inside.
Kyle Busch has had a successful NASCAR Cup Series career and has won two championships. He spent the majority of his Cup Series career with Joe Gibbs Racing before moving to Richard Childress Racing.
