I'm sure you've heard about all the delays and cancellations at the airports lately, maybe you've even experienced it for yourself, well, if you want to be on time there's some airlines you'll want to avoid.
According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, on-time arrivals among U.S. airports haven't been this low since 2014. From January-April 2022, only 76% of nonstop domestic flights arrived on time, 20% of flights were delayed and 4% were canceled completely. Last year during the same period, 87% of flights were on time and less than 2% were canceled.
So the big question is, why is this happening? There's a few different reasons. One is that there is a staffing shortage so when there's a mechanical issue or a delay it could be because they don't have the manpower to run smoothly, not to mention there's a shortage of air traffic controllers as well. Another factor is weather, which isn't a huge issue, but it still contributes to delays. Increased travel demand is also a factor because just one delay can create a domino effect if the same plane is scheduled to fly multiple times in one day.
So what airline should you fly for the best chance to arriving on time? According to Marketwatch.com, both Delta and Hawaiian arrive on time 82% of the time, American and United 78% of the time and 74% of Southwest flights arrive on time.
What airlines should you avoid?
JetBlue comes in last on the list with just 60% of on time arrivals, Frontier 63% and Spirit with 68% of flights arriving on time. You may find a better price with these airlines, but probably better to fly only when you have some flexibility with your plans.
Here's some tips that may help you get to your destination on time:
- Book the earliest flight of the day
- Avoid layovers
- Choose an airline with multiple flights per day
