Each week we bring you two moments, one of epic success, someone who absolutely nailed it! And another of an epic failure, someone who totally failed it. This week for the Nailed It we visit a YouTube Stream that is finding a whole new way to play games. Over at Mutekimaru's YouTube Stream, a tank of fish were able to play and beat Pokemon Sapphire using motion capture technology.
Just Keep Swimming
Some truly incredible stunts have been pulled in the name of technology and gaming. Gamers have found insane ways to play games, using things like DDR pads or playing DOOM on a pregnancy test. When it comes to Pokemon games, Twitch Plays broke the record as it allowed a hive mind of viewers to simultaneously play a single game of Pokemon which they eventually beat. But Mutekimaru is taking all of that to another level and removing the human element altogether.
Over at the YouTube Channel for Mutekimaru, the YouTuber set up a program with motion capture to allow a tank of fish to play video games. With the motion controls monitoring certain quadrants of the tank, various areas triggered different controls. Swimming into these areas would denote an up, down, left, right, A, or B entry for the Game Boy game. It effectively lets the fish play Pokemon Sapphire just by swimming around.
A New Champion Appears
It's a novel concept, but had you told me about this stunt before attempting to pull it off I would've said it was ultimately fruitless. There is no way that a fish would be able to actually play the came in any proper context this way. Boy, would I have been wrong. It took the tank of fish 3,195 hours but sure enough, they were able to beat the Champion of the Hoenn region. Check out the video below, but be warned not a lot happens for a long time. But in the end, a tank of fish is able to beat a Pokemon game.
