The Class-A Advanced Affiliate of the Minnesota Twins unveiled a new brand Tuesday morning during a ballpark news conference, according to the official site of Minor League Baseball.
The team formerly known as The Fort Myers Miracle since moving from Miami to Southwest Florida in 1992 will now be recognized as the Mighty Mussels. Brainstorming sessions around the new name included two prerequisites: It must be regionally specific while also reflecting a healthy, active lifestyle.
The new primary logo for the Mighty Mussels features a muscular mussel assertively pointing upward as to what owner Andrew Kaufman describes as a "Let's go" gesture. The color palette represent colors that define Southwest Florida including Twins Navy, Gulf Purple, Sunset Lavender, Golden Sun, Yellow Sand, and Sky Blue, according to reports.
Florida's freshwater bodies support more than 60 species of mussels and clams, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
The Fort Myers Mighty Mussels will make their debut on April 9, playing at home against the St. Lucie Mets.
