49ers Cut Former Super Bowl MVP Malcolm Smith

Despite having three years to go on his five-year contract, linebacker Malcolm Smith has been axed by the 49ers.

The former Super Bowl MVP's dismissal, announced Tuesday, comes after he appeared in just 12 games since signing his $26.5 million deal with San Francisco in 2017. While Smith did play in three preseason games this year, he managed to make only two tackles.

The 30-year-old former Seahawk is probably best known for his 69-yard touchdown run after intercepting a pass by the Broncos' Peyton Manning in Super Bowl XLVIII.
