If you're someone who can't resist the allure of the great outdoors, one Southwest Florida city has landed on a list of the best for nature lovers.

When you think of Florida, the first images that pop into your head might be the pristine beaches of Fort Myers, Sanibel and Captiva, Mickey Mouse ears galore in Orlando and retirees enjoying the sun. But there's a wild side to the Sunshine State too. If you find yourself skipping with joy at the sight of a blooming flower or feel your heart race with excitement when spotting one of the 500 species of birds soaring high in the sky, there's certain places in Florida that are just a little better than others.

I've always loved being outside. From when I was a little girl to now, I'd rather do any outdoor activity other than being inside. Whether it's hiking, kayaking or exploring a botanical garden there's nothing I love more than exploring. Especially here in Florida with good weather in our favor, it's great to have things to do outside year-round.

Southwest Florida Nature - Panthers, Pythons and Bears!

There's certainly no lack of interesting animals here in Florida. If it's gators you're on the hunt for, you don't have to look too far. I have a few that live in the lake in my backyard. But if you want more of an adventure, an airboat ride in the Everglades or the Okefenokee Swamp, there's plenty big ones to be seen. Of course Florida is home to gentle underwater giants – the manatees. They can be spotted just about everywhere, including Manatee Park in Fort Myers, but the Crystal River during the winter months offers an unforgettable encounter.

So where do you go if nature is what you're looking for? Here are 5 Florida cities in that Forbes listed as the best for nature lovers, including one in Southwest Florida.

Gainesville is home to Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park where you can actually free-roaming bison, the only place in the state to see such a sight. Sweetwater Wetlands Park is the place to find gators, as well as many different kinds of birds. Carson Springs Wildlife is an exotic animal and endangered species animal park.

Panama City Beach

For beach lovers, Panama City Beach is a favorite for swimming, paddleboarding and spotting dolphins frolicking in the waves. If you're looking for a hiking spot, Conservation Park features trails and great nature views and creature spotting.

So many great spots to enjoy nature in Fort Myers. From Six Mile Slough to Lakes Park to the Ding Darling on Sanibel there's lots to see and do from hiking to kayaking. Manatee Park is a great place to spot the gentle giants, especially in the winter months.
