The Real Top 25 College Football Rankings for Week 3 are here.  I don’t trust AP voters and certainly not Coaches Poll voters.  The people voting in both of those polls either don’t watch enough college football, vote against other teams on purpose due to regionalisms or simply have their respective sports information directors or other minions vote for them.

Pete’s Mindset for His Rankings of the Top 25 College Football teams

My real top 25 rankings are not necessarily based on style points.  I take into consideration previous rankings, strength of opponent, home, away or neutral site victories and heart.  You may not always agree with my rankings, however I will be as fair and impartial as possible while basing all my rankings on the previous criteria.

I will be posting my Top 25 College Football Rankings every Monday.  They will be out before noon time. I had some free time so I’ll just go ahead and send this on Sunday monring.

And just for the record, my pre-season college football playoff final four was:

  1. Alabama
  2. Ohio State
  3. Georgia
  4. Miami

I have Alabama beating Miami in one semi-final game and Georgia beating Ohio State in the other.  My championship game has Alabama beating Georgia in the final.  This obviously is subject to change should these teams stumble at some point along the way.

The Real Top-5 dominates Week 3 Action

None of the teams currently ranked in the Real Top-5 were challenged on Saturday as they combined for 295 total points, the most by the Real Top-5 on a single day all-time. The previous-most was 289 points on October 27, 1973.  Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan and Clemson all scored at least 45 points.  This is the first time each team in the Real Top-5 scored at least 45 points on the same day.

This poll is for you, the tremendous fans of the Shemon and Sheppard Show.  I hope you enjoy it.

  • 25. Syracuse

Welcome to The Real Top 25 Orange!  Garrett Shrader connected with Oronde Gadsden II on a 25-yard touchdown with seven seconds left to lift Syracuse to a 32-29 win over Purdue on Saturday.  The Cuse are no 3-0 on the year.  They continue their 4 game homestand when they host Virginia on Friday night.

  • 24. Appalachian State

After hosting College Gameday, Appalachian State kept its entertaining season going with a 32-26 win over Troy that was won on a 53-yard TD catch by Christian Horn as time expired. All three of its games have been decided by 4 points or fewer.

  • 23. Florida

What the heck is up with the Gators?

Anthony Richardson nearly cost Florida another victory.

He can thank cornerback Tre’Vez Johnson, running back Trevor Etienne and South Florida’s late gaffes for getting him off the hook.  Etienne’s 3-yard touchdown run followed Johnson’s fourth-quarter interception and helped the Gators hold off South Florida 31-28 in the Swamp on Saturday night.  The Gators should have flat out destroyed this team.  They drop this week.

  • 22. Washington

Craig Shemon’s worst nightmare was coming true before his very eyes.  Washington finished with 503 total yards as it took down Michigan State, 39-28.  Former Indiana Hoosier Michael Penix Jr. threw for 397 passing yards, the 2nd-most in a game in his career. He also finished with 4 passing touchdowns for the 3rd time in his career.

  • 21. Texas A/M

The Aggies rebounded after last week’s loss to App State, defeating Miami 17-9.  Jimbo Fisher improved to 8-1 in his head coaching career vs the Hurricanes. The Aggies allowed under 10 points vs an AP ranked opponent for the 2nd time under Jimbo Fisher (other instance was last year vs Auburn when it allowed 3 points)

  • 20. Oregon

The Ducks beat BYU 41-20, snapping a 4-game losing streak in ranked vs ranked matchups. The Ducks had lost its previous 4 such games by 120 points. Oregon logged its 14th win by 20+ in a ranked-vs-ranked matchup since the start of 2010. That’s tied with Georgia for 3rd-most by any team in that span. Only Alabama (29)and Ohio State (15) have more over that span

  • 19. Florida State

Very impressive road win on Friday night for the Seminoles.  They went into a very hostile environment and beat the Cardinals in Louisville 35-31.  The victory didn’t come without a price however as the Seminoles lost starting QB Travis Jordan late in the first half with a lower left leg injury.  However, sophomore Tate Rodemaker came in and led the Noles to three, 75 yard scoring drives in the second half.  The 3-0 Noles are back home Saturday night in prime time hosting Boston College.

  • 18. Penn State

Penn State went to Auburn and had no problem in a 41-12 win. The 41 points are the most allowed by  Auburn vs a non-conference opponent since 2001. For Penn State, this is tied for its 2nd-largest win ever over an SEC school

  • 17. Baylor

The Bears destroyed the Texas State Bobcats at home in Waco, 42-7.  The Bears will have a much tougher test on Saturday when they travel to Iowa State for their Big 12 opener.  The Cyclones are 3-0.

  • 16. Wake Forest

Wake Forest got all it could handle from Liberty, hanging on for a 37-36 win after Liberty went for two to go for the win after scoring its final TD.  Gotta love Hugh Freeze who will be back soon to a Power 5 school.

  • 15. Tennessee

The Vols won 63-6 vs Akron. This marked the largest victory for the Volunteers since 2000. Tennessee has scored 156 points through 3 games, their most to open a season since 1914, when they had 171 points through their first 3 games.

  • 14. Mississippi

The Rebels logged its largest shutout against a FBS opponent since 2008 in a 42-0 win over Georgia Tech.  Ole Miss has allowed 13 points this season, its fewest through the first 3 games of a season since 1963.

  • 13. Arkansas

Arkansas got everything it could handle from Missouri State before pulling away in the end. winning 38-27. The Razorbacks became the first AP Top-10 team to trail by 17 points against a FCS opponent since the FBS/FCS split in 1978. K.J. Jefferson finished with a career-high 385 passing yards.

  • 12. NC State

The Wolfpack improved to 3-0 on the year with a solid 27-14 win at home vs. Texas Tech.  The Wolfpack will get to beat up on UConn this Saturday.  Their last non-conference game of the year.

  • 11. Miami

Very frustrating game for the U as they fell on the road to Texas A/M 17-9 in a game that was very winnable.  You have to play well in all 3 phases of the game to win in a hostile environment.  The Canes were sloppy on special teams with a muffed punt that led to an Aggies touchdown and two missed field goals.  They also had several key drops throughout the game and were still in position to tie it late.  The Canes defense for the most part was outstanding.  They have some tweaking to do and this team will only continue to get better.  The Canes should get back on track next week when they host Middle Tennessee State.

Cam Rising threw for 224 yards and a career-high four touchdowns in three quarters to help the Utes rout San Diego State 35-7 on Saturday night.  Utah visits Arizona State on Saturday.

  • 9. Kentucky

The Wildcats beat Youngstown State 31-0, as Mark Stoops faced his hometown team.  Stoops was born in Youngstown.  His father was also a high school teacher at Cardinal Mooney.

  • 8. Oklahoma State

The Cowboys defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff 63-7. The Cowboys have won 11 straight home games, their longest home win streak in program history.

  • 7. Clemson

Clemson extended its home win streak to 36 games after taking down Louisiana Tech 48-20. That is the longest active home winning streak in the FBS and 1 shy of Florida State’s ACC-record home winning streak of 37 games from 1992 to 2001.  Will Shipley had 2 rushing touchdowns, becoming the first ACC running back to record multiple rush TD in each of his team’s first 3 games of a season since Wali Lundy for Virginia in 2004.

  • 6. USC

The Trojans won 45-17 over Fresno State. Caleb Williams became the first USC player over the last 25 years with multiple passing and rushing touchdowns in a game.

  • 5. Michigan

Any school that schedules UConn will always drop in my rankings.  That goes for everyone!  For the first time in program history, Michigan has scored at least 50 points in each of its first 3 games of a season
after winning 59-0 over UConn. The Wolverines are the 2nd Big Ten team to record 50 points in each of its first 3 games in the AP Poll era (since 1936), joining Iowa in 1997.

Blake Corum recorded 5 rushing touchdowns on Saturday, tied for the most in a game in Michigan history (Hassan Haskins vs Ohio State in 2021, Ron Johnson vs Wisconsin in 1968).

  • 4. Oklahoma

The Sooners had no problem with Nebraska, winning 49-14 in the Cornhuskers first game after firing Scott Frost.  Interim coach and former Nebraska QB Mickey Joseph was at the helm for the Cornhuskers and they suffered their largest loss since 2020. The 35-point loss snaps a streak of 13 straight losses by single-digits for Nebraska. That is the longest such streak since UNLV lost 16 straight by single digits from 1983-84.

  • 3. Ohio State

C.J. Stroud went 22-for-27 for 367 passing yards and 5 passing touchdowns in a 77-21 win against Toledo. • 2. Alabama

(Please keep it do a dull road Craig.  I can’t take it!!)  The Crimson Tide didn’t expect this barn burner.  Somehow they overcame, adjusted and adapted on their way to a stunning 63-7 win over U-L Monroe.  Bryce Young finished with 3 passing touchdowns and a rushing touchdowns in an Alabama victory over UL Monroe. The Crimson Tide have won consecutive home games by 55+ points for the first time since 1924

  • 1. Georgia

Yes, it is time.  Georgia has finally leapfrogged Alabama(don’t do it Craig) in my real Top 25 Rankings.  Georgia won 48-7 vs South Carolina, the largest win by either team in series history. The Bulldogs have outscored their opponents by 120 points this season, 4th-best by a defending national champion through its first 3 games of a season since 1980.
