One More Thought About Saquon Barkley…
The Eagles had the win on their finger tips vs the Falcons on Monday night… until they did not. Saquon Barkley dropped the ball and everything changed.
The Eagles led by 3 points with under two minutes to play. Philly had third down and three yards to go from the Falcons 10 yard line. Barkley ran an inside-out rout from the backfield to the right flat and Jalen Hurts delivered a perfect pass to him. And Barkley dropped the ball. If he makes the catch there its first and goal and the Eagles would just take a knee, run out the clock and go home a winner and owners of a 2-0 record.
But instead, Barkley dropped the ball. The clock stopped. And the Eagles settled for a field goal and Kirk Cousins and the Falcons got the ball back down 21-15 with a little more than a minute to go and no timeouts. (One could argue it was a bad play call where a running play would have been safer and the clock would continue to run. But the pass play was a pretty high percentage play they had run successfully earlier in the game).
Cousins, who used to have a bad rep for losing prime time, nationally televised games was masterful and led the Falcons on a six play, 70 yard drive and capped it with a game winning touchdown pass to Drake London. (Who’s penalty for unsportsmanlike celebration forced the Falcons to kick a 48 yard extra point for a 22-21 win). We could argue the Eagles pass rush on that final drive was pathetic and Cousins simply sat back in the pocket and made plays like he was in a seven on seven drill. So, the loss does not fall entirely on the hands of Saquon Barkley.
MORE ON SAQUON BARKLEY
On the night Barkley rushed for 95 yards and made 4 catches for 21 yards. And in the Eagles season opening win vs the Packers Saquon Barkley ran for 109 yards and rushed for two touchdowns and caught another touchdown pass. Without Barkley, the Eagles would be 0-2. Granted they should be 2-0, but they are 1-1 and it is not the end of the world unless the Eagles and their fans make it seem so.
