Cleveland Browns Quarterback Situation Dire

Cleveland Browns quarterback situation

The Cleveland Browns quarterback situation is in bad shape. But, what else is new? The Browns QB situation has almost always been bad. Brian Sipe was good in the 1970's and early 1980's. Bernie Kosar followed Sipe and provided nine years of stability at the QB position.

However, since 1999 the Browns have had 38 players start at QB for the team. Since then they have only had two quarterbacks and three seasons where the same player started every game. Tim Couch did it in 2001 and Baker Mayfield did it in 2019 and 2020.

CLEVELAND BROWNS QUARTERBACK SITUATION...

Ah, Baker Mayfield. The Browns made the Heisman Trophy winner the top pick in the 2018 draft and they thought they had their franchise guy in place. But after some injuries the team gave up on him and now he is a very good quarterback for Tampa Bay. Oops.

In the meantime they were so desperate to land a franchise QB, they traded for a Deshaun Watson. They sent Houston six draft picks, including three first rounders in a head scratching deal. Then they signed him to a $230 million dollar contract. All guaranteed. Another head scratcher!

And we haven't even mentioned that the Browns acquired him despite the fact he had been embroiled in numerous legal situations where two dozen female message therapists sued him for sexual harassment and sexual assault. He denied wrong doing and settled most of the claims. The Cleveland Browns quarterback situation is dire!

Since joining the Browns he has suffered numerous injuries and when he does play he looks disinterested. He was not good vs the Cowboys this past week to open the season when he is presumably as healthy as he is ever going to be. The Cleveland Browns quarterback situation is not good to say the least.

But now Watson is facing a new sexual assault charge dating back to 2020. It is clearly time to cut bait with Watson but the Browns are in a sticky spot due to the size of his guaranteed contract. After this year they still have a salary cap hit of over $170 million dollars. Yikes. Perhaps this new accusation will offer a contractual loophole clause where they can be free and clear of Watson and his massive contract.
