Caleb Williams starts his Heisman campaign with a bang. He led the USC Trojans to a 56-28 win over San José State. The 56 points are tied for the Trojans 4th most in a season opener in the AP Poll Era (Since 1936).
Caleb Williams, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner went off with 4 Pass TD and 0 Int.
It was Williams 10th career game at USC in which he’s been responsible for at least 4 TD. That’s already tied for the 2nd-most by any USC player in the last 25 seasons. Saturday marked just his 15th game with the Trojans.
It’s his 6th game with 4 Pass TD in the last 2 seasons, tied with Sam Hartman (who also threw 4 Pass TD Saturday) for the 2nd most in the last 2 seasons.
Zachariah Branch became the first USC player with a receiving touchdown and a kickoff return touchdown in the same game since Adoree’ Jackson vs Notre Dame on November 26, 2016.
Fighting Irish Dominate Navy on Emerald Isle
Notre Dame beat Navy 42-3 in Ireland, the Fighting Irish’s 3rd-largest win a season opener in the last 50 seasons, and their largest since a 40-point win over Navy in 2012 (which also happened in Ireland).
Sam Hartman went 19-23 with 4 Pass TD and 0 Int. He is the 3rd different Notre Dame QB in the last 25 seasons to throw 4 Pass TD, no interceptions while completing at least 80% of his passes in a single game.
After 4 on Saturday, Hartman has 114 Pass TD in his career, tied with Danny Wuerffel for 14th on the FBS all-time list. He is now just 5 Pass TD away from cracking the Top 10.
It was Notre Dame’s 75th win over Navy in the AP Poll Era (since 1936), the most by one current FBS team against another. It pains me to say it as a huge Miami Hurricane's fan, but the Irish are a damn good football team!
UMass Amasses Points
It’s been a minute since the Minutemen won their season opener against an FBS opponent. Their win over New Mexico State was their first season-opening win against FBS opponent since 1984 vs Ball State.
Their 41 points are their most in a game since they scored 62 on Nov. 3, 2018 vs Liberty. You can check out all of Saturday's box scores here.

While it's still early to make definitive predictions, there are several storylines and matchups that are already generating buzz.
There are already several high-profile games scheduled for the early part of the season. These include matchups such as Alabama vs. Texas. Clemson vs. Georgia. And Ohio State vs. Notre Dame, among others.
One of the most intriguing storylines is the continued rise of young quarterbacks across the country.
Many of the top teams in the country will be led by quarterbacks who are only in their second or third years of college, which promises to make for some exciting games.
